Kailee Briin was born was born in 1355 dr, and grew up in Cormyr. Her family, "new money" within the edges of the wealthy set of Suzail, was very conscious of their place in the social structure. Her great-grandfather had been an adventurer, and in his travels came to be respected by many of the Shaaran tribes. When he returned home, he was able to use those connections to source some of the finest quality ivory.. and more importantly, was able to keep other Cormyr-ian business rivals from doing the same. Her grandfather had followed in his footsteps, and taken to adventures in his early days as well - but with a goal. In his travels, he sought out and recruited sculptors from across faerun, to carve that ivory into art. The family became a part of the Suzail legacy of ivory carvers, known for their exotic interpretations of art and carving. Her father had inherited that legacy, and with his business skills brought the family to their current precarious standing - new money, without the respect and security of the old-money family alliances.
Very conscious of class, rank, and behaviors, she grew up with the proper education that one ought to have. She always enjoyed music, and from a young age took to those lessons well. She was often invited to events her elder sister had never been, for everyone knew she was likely to bring along her music. Her parents encouraged the connections that brought to everyone in the family.
In 1371, when she was 16, the dragon led the orc and goblin armies against Cormyr, and her family left. They fled across the dragonmere to Teziir, where they had long kept a modest holding from which to do business.
Then came the evening that she met her gur – her gypsy. She had traveled for a picnic to an estate, and towards the end of the evening a storm came up. She left in a hurry to beat the storm, and on the way came across a gypsy who had been present at the estate earlier that evening. He had heard and recognized the latent talent of the weave in her music, and sought her out. Chiding her for hurrying home on account of the storm, he drew her into dancing in the rain on the hilltop instead. It seemed perfectly reasonable at the time, and she still smiles fondly when she thinks of it. This led to that, as such things will. And news made it to her father the next morning, as such things will. He came alone, to best shield the family reputation. The gypsy took his leave without bloodshed, and Kailee was firmly taken home. But she had changed. He had shown her the first glimpse of the connection between her music and the weave. She had broken from the careful rules of tradition, and glimpsed something else entirely. Which despite all of the lectures and anger which rolled past her now distracted attention, she felt yearning to return to. Her family's response was to impose more oversight, rules, and keep her out of the bustle of 'society' while the gossip died down. And, when it became obvious she was pregnant, in futile attempt to keep new gossip from gaining momentum.
With the inspiration of the truly naive, confidently daft, or simply determined and inspired, she leaves home. Though they are an insular group, she seeks out and finds the gur clan which the father was from. She tells her tale and is told she can stay for the birthing, but the child is a gur and rightly theirs. She can stay to recover, then must be on her way. Months more pregnant by this point and without options, she accepts. When she leaves, she leaves her daughter (Kadra) in the care of the girl’s grandmother, Cattiliara – a gifted oracle and diviner.
Having learned enough in her time with the clan to survive on her music (and having stashed some gold she took from home), she made her way rather aimlessly, focused on her music. And now, finds herself in Polm.
