Dunno what else I can bring into the mix as much has already been spoken, and I agree to most of it. The only thing I would add, to Ali's concerns about the religions of druids and rangers is that they do not really follow a diety in my oppinion.
As pretty individual characters (well rangers more than druids I think) as opposed to paladins and clerics that mostly operate in organised groups: congregations, churches, paladin knight orders, the ranger and druid are sort of loners to me. From my english history classes in which we covered some of the druidic practices of celtic origin I found that yes, druids did meet with each other on holy sites durins special parts of the year in sacred groves (such as Anglesey island) but that they more or less loners. Same is my idea of a ranger.
What I am trying to say is that the paladins and clerics are sort of trained to worsjip a god...some look for one and wind up in churches or orders and are "brought into the faith". After their period of study and training they are now representatives of that god. Their initial beliefs can be true, I am not saying that they are employees that carry out a craft and Talos or Talona or Nobanion are only brand names=]
Now with the rangers and druids...I think it is the other way around. They practice their beliefs, tending nature in the best way they think (good ones work with farmers to condition them how to till the land properly etc, evil ones hang hunters by their guts on trees...bla bla bla=]) and through this gain the patronage of nature dieties. The gods pick out their followers according to their mentality. If a druid believes in balance above all things and does not get involved into the matters of "civilized" folk then say a neutral diety such a silvanus can begin "sponsoring him" (visit him in his reverie, meditation, show signs of intrests, portents of alliance). Same thing with a ranger who decides that say humans are a menace and they need to be shown the might of the forest, the brutal ancient and savage power of the beasts that can defend themselves...then...
- *ding dong*
- "Who is it?"
- "Malar, how do you do?"
That is how I always saw it anyway. The second scenario could work with the paladins and clerics as well. I just thought that this "civilization" allowed some individuals a choice in a world of many religions.
